Mirror Mirror

Gary Kelly came and I cant tell you how great it was to have a chance to learn from him. Such a huge wealth of knowledge. The assignment he gave us was to illustrate a Sin. We were all assigned various ones and I got Envy. The portrait I chose to do was of the queen from Snow White. It was mostly an exploration of mixing media. I wasn't all that excited about the subject and all but I learned a lot media wise in the making of it. Its a step in a totally different direction from what I normally do.

Also the "Mirror Mirror" words in the background are in gold leaf and it doesn't exactly scan well... oh well

Portrait

For our second assignment we were to do a portrait of someone for a Rolling Stone Illustration. I chose to do one of John Lee Hooker.

Myakka

I cant tell you how much I enjoy painting in Myakka Park. Heres a recent one from Sunday and a few photos to go along with it. Planning another outing later this week. I hope the rain holds out.

Academy Drawings

Whoa man its been a long time since I've updated. I feel like I say that every time I post though. This summers been busy with the Illustration academy. I should be posting a lot more in the Next week or two.

Myakka Park

I've had the chance to get out to Myakka state park a lot lately for painting. Its and awesome place to paint and get out to see a bit of Florida wildlife. Gators are a big concern in the area. Since the water ways are full of them its important to kinda have your wits about you will moving about. Ill post more paintings I've done soon but for now heres one of them.

Avant Guard

A bunch of friends and myself had the chance to draw some people during Avant Guard at Ringling. We got the chance to meet a lot of cool people. Many had some really great costumes and were excited to sit for us. It was a really fun night and we raised a lot of money for FEWS. An after hours figure drawing program at Ringling run by student looking for more figure drawing/painting experience.

Pastels

Academy style

Inks

A couple ink drawings from our costumed pose in figure class. I had a lot of fun with theses and they went pretty quickly. I tried not to think too much while doing them and just relax. Sometimes I bring my mind too much into this whole drawing thing and it can be a killer. Ive been experimenting more this semester with various processes and looks. Im starting to get more of a handle on what I want out of a painting and drawing. Finally things are becoming clearer its almost like getting lost in the woods and while looking for the way out you find a clearing. A place to rest and get your bearings again.

A few more paintings

A few more updates. I did the painting of Allie on the left for figure class. There are parts I like and parts I don't. Im fairly happy with the way it turned out though. I wish the scan was a little nicer though. You notice a lot of little white spots and reflections when you click on it but at least you get the idea.

Midterm is coming up...that sorta crept up on me. I still feel like we're so much further through the semester than we are. Days all bleed together. Nights into days and I never seem to know what day it really is. I feel like there's real world time and Ringling time. The outside world and the world of artist and Ive lost all touch with the outside world. I cant really conceive of a life other than this one. Not worrying about homework and deadlines or who got into society and when the next show is. Its going to feel so weird to leave this place. To be able to have weekends and hobbies and have a normal sleeping schedule again. Im goning to miss the chaos of school when it all ends.

Cheers
